City’s Tuna industry was heightened by the inauguration of the Signal Marine Shipyard located at Cabu, Tambler , General Santos City, September 2.

Signal Marine Shipyard (SMS) worth P200 million, is the biggest and most modern shipyard in Central

Mindanao; equipped with 5-hectare ship factory deck engaged on ship building, repairing, dry docking and net fabricating..

Marfinio Tan, one of the incorporators of SMS and president of SocSKSarGen Federaton Fishing and Allied Industries Inc. (SFFAII) said that two more slipways at 210-meter length each would be built soon to carry an average of 3,000-gross tonnage vessel for every slipway.

“This is proudly a Filipino-owned corporation,” Tan added

Meanwhile, Francis Laurel, president of Frabelle Fishing Corp. also an SMS incorporator revealed that Tan proposed the shipyard two years ago; apparently it comes now into realization.

“The people of Sarangani province and General Santos City will benefit from the project in terms of direct and indirect employment of 500 workers, plus the increase of trade and allied services in the area,” Laurel said.

Sarangani Provincial Governor Miguel Rene A. Dominguez commended the initiative, which he said would boost the potentials of the tuna industry.

Present to unleash the ribbon were General Santos City Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. and South Cotabato Rep. Darlene Antonino-Custodio.
