  • The course aims to provide intensive, pedagogical and critical analysis of introductory math concepts in first year and fourth year high schools. It consists of lectures, demonstrations and the preparation of course guides and other appropriate materials needed.

 

II. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

To demonstrate proper attitude and apply correct teaching methods and techniques in presenting basic mathematics concepts by being able to:

  • Identify specific methods and strategies in teaching suitable for a particular topic
  • Design an appropriate lesson plans
  • Recall, recognizes and applies basic algebraic concepts.
  • Develop the right attitude and values with regard to applications of mathematical concepts and principles.

Course Description

Practice Teaching is a 6-unit course offered to those who have completed all Field Study courses. It is part of the Experiential Learning courses of the new teacher education curriculum which gives the prospective teachers the chance to experience the life in actual learning environment. The opportunities and experiences embedded in the course will enable them to meet the challenges of the real learning environment. The varied requirements will help them cope with the demands of the profession.


Goals:

Make Every New Teacher Observe and Learn Right (MENTOR)

  1. Demonstrates deep and principled understanding of the learning processes and the role of the teacher in facilitating theses processes in their students.
  2. Manifests a meaningful and comprehensive knowledge of the subject matter they will teach.
  3. Applies a wide range of teaching process skills (including curriculum development, lesson planning, use of appropriate technology, materials development, educational assessment and teaching approaches.
  4. Acquires direct experience in the field/ classroom (e.g. classroom observations, teaching assistance and practice teaching)
  5. Practices the professional and ethical requirements of the teaching profession
  6. Facilitates learning of diverse type of learners, in diverse types of learning environments, using a wide range of teaching knowledge and skills.
  7. Reflects on the relationships among the teaching process skills, the learning processing in the students, the nature of the content/subject matter and the broader social forces encumbering in the schools and educational processes in order to constantly improve theor teaching knowledge skills and practices
  8. Creates and innovates alternative teaching approaches, takes informed risks in trying out these innovative approaches, and evaluates the effectiveness of such approaches in improving students learning;
  9. Continues to learn in order to teach to learn to better fulfill their mission as teachers

This is a three (3) unit course designed to introduce both traditional and innovative technologies to facilitate and foster meaningful and effective learning. Students are expected to demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature, application and production of the various types of educational technologies. The course will likewise focus both on developing teacher-support materials and the production of technology-based student outputs.

This course is designed to provide students with opportunities to examine the application of teaching theories and principles in the learning environment. Students are expected to verify the cognitive meta-cognitive, individual differences, and motivational factors that influence the acquisition of knowledge. The students are given the chance to develop and try out learning tasks, instructional materials, and assessment tools. Field study 3 can be anchored on the following Professional Education Subjects.

Objectives:

  • Enrich knowledge on teaching methods and strategies, appropriate instructional materials and assessment tools used by teachers.
  • Reflect on the application of different theories of learning and knowledge acquisition that promote cognitive and meta-cognitive processes, positive motivational processes and use varied resources of learning in the actual learning environment.
  • Develop alternative ways of teaching a lesson

The course aims to introduce the basic ideas, concepts and principles of research methodology, the problem, methods of research, preparation of research instruments designed to arrive at exact analysis and interpretation of data.

This course emphasizes the use of technology in the mathematics classroom. The rationale and principles behind incorporating the use of calculators and computer in learning mathematics will be discussed. Consequently, relevant issued and other related problems will be addressed. The use of graphing calculators and computer algebra system is highly encourage. CITE 3S emphasizes to equip students with the necessary knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the basic principles in multi-grade teaching. The course introduces prospective teachers to the complex nature of multi-grade learning and teaching environmental classes which include an exposure to ICT-based teacher training for multi-grade teachers and the basic principles associated with the different methods, strategies and current approaches in multi-grade teaching purposely designed for diverse group of students in a class.
